OUR GOALThis site will be dedicated to the Eternal city, the city of Rome and its monuments. As a young boy, I used to spend 3 months of the year in Italy, most of that time was spent by the seaside town of Ostia Lido, the old Roman port, about half an hour drive from Rome city. Ostia Lido is now integral part of the city of Rome
However, when we were not basking in the sun or swimming the Mediterranean sea, we would simply go on a visit trip to Rome. God knows I have visited the Eternal city countless times, taking friends, friends of friends and even family members from the south. I just cannot get enough of Rome. I love that City! | S P A C E R | Roman MonumentsI will use the blog section to present the monuments. Each monument will come with a little description and an historical synopsis, while I'll be using the Photo menu to, you guessed it, display as many pictures as possible. You can subscribe to our blog post, that way you'll be notified each time our blog is updated. Something we will try to do on a regular basis. A few facts about RomeRome or Roma in Italian, is the capital city of Italy, and the largest city of the country, counting a population of over 3,5 million inhabitants called Romans. Its history spans over thousands of years, and the first signs of life that were found there are said to date back more than 10000 years. It is said that Rome was founded by two brothers, Romulus and Remus, who were said to have been found and brought up by a wolf. The legend says that Romulus committed fratricide, and after killing Remus, named the town after himself. Rome finds itself on the central-western coast of Italy, in the region of Lazio, with the River Tiber running through it, and has been the capital city of the Roman Empire, Kingdom and Republic. Hence we talk about the Glory of Rome. Rome is also the seat of the Papacy and within the city is the papal State of the Vatican, the smallest and richest state on earth. For a capital city in the western hemisphere, I would say that the ethnic diversity is not as pronounced as in some of its European neighbours. The minorities tend to come from eastern countries, mostly Polish and Romanians, East Asia and western Africa.< /p> Rome is predominantly Roman Catholic and is home to more than 5000 churches. Most of them are a pleasure to visit, if not for the spiritual side of it, at least for the architectural wealth. And so are the majority of buildings that you will see in Rome. The centre of Rome is a hub of monuments all so beautiful, and all telling their own story. And it is those stories that we will try to tell you here on this website. I hope you’ll enjoy it. Have fun navigating through the site!< /p> |
